Storage

|
Upon
purchasing Shipyard Island Marina, we had several goals in mind.
Naturally, one of those goals was to provide our customers inside
storage. Since we already had the building, all we needed was a hauler,
and so we decided to purchase a brand new 30 ton hydraulic
trailer. After using this trailer to haul boats that first year, we
decided it wasn't the most efficient or safest way to move our customers' boats
from the water to our storage building. For the following season, we
installed a TraveLift boat lifting well and purchased a new 35 ton Marine
TraveLift. As our customer base grew (and so did the size of their boats),
we installed a larger haul-out well for the larger boats and upgraded to the 70
ton Marine TraveLift we currently use. This has allowed us to accommodate
about 95% of the pleasure boats on Lake Michigan.
Just as the equipment evolved, so did the storage
facilities. We
had started with an inside unheated
storage building, and answered our customers' demands for heated storage by
adding a new inside heated storage building in 1993. Boats scheduled for repair or maintenance
during the off season are moved out of storage and into our repair facility
before work is begun. Our heated building is kept at 50o or
above, and has generator back-up in case of a power outage. In addition to
inside storage, we also have ample outside storage. Appropriate vessel
and engine winterization is performed in accordance with the type of storage
requested.
